CHIROPRACTIC CARE

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that diagnoses and treats disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and monitors their effect on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, joint pain in the arms and legs, and headaches. Chiropractic Doctors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment. Manipulation of the affected joint and tissue restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises.

Custom Orthotics

Your feet have a crucial role in supporting your body. A slight imbalance can have a significant – and painful! – impact on the joints higher up in your body. Orthotics are custom inserts that fit into your footwear; orthotic footwear are specialized shoes, boots or sandals with your insert built-in. They are specifically designed to support and improve the functioning of your feet. Orthotics are prescribed to treat many chronic foot or lower limb problems, or to allow athletes to maximize performance.

Before prescribing custom orthotics, thorough gait and posture analysis is done, as well as a physical examination to correctly diagnose your issues and recommend the appropriate treatment. Comprehensive follow-up care is also provided, including any alterations that may be required for your orthotics or custom footwear.

Gaitscan ™

The TOG GaitScan™ is an innovative diagnostic tool and digital casting device that analyzes your biomechanics. With 4096 sensors and a scan rate of 300 frames per second, GaitScan™ is the industry leader in bio-mechanical analysis.

This method of assessing your gait cycle gives the chiropractor a wealth of information, including images to assess and articulate the need for orthotic therapy. Over a million points of data are recorded, tracking minor flaws in your biomechanics and shedding light on issues that could develop into painful conditions if left untreated.

Concussion Care

If you suspect you may have sustained a concussion, head or neck injury you can book a consultation with Dr. Meagan Lynch, Chiropractor. She will conduct a thorough post-injury evaluation in order to gain a complete picture of your injury and how it’s impacted you. This includes a detailed interview in order to obtain information on:

THIS EVALUATION INCLUDES A DETAILED INTERVIEW TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON:

  •  How the injury occurred
  • How you felt immediately after
  • How you’re feeling currently
  • History of previous concussions
  • Current and past medical conditions
  • Previous trauma/injury
  • · Medications

The physical examination provides us with insight into the severity of your injury, as well as specific impairments that may need to be addressed as part of an ongoing management strategy. This portion of testing may include a combination of the following:

  • Balance testing
  • Strength and Coordination testing
  • Screening of visual motor skills
  • Vestibular (or equilibrium) testing
  • Gait assessment
  • Generalized neurological screen
  • Orthopedic assessment of secondary injuries (e.g. neck, shoulders)

The above testing procedures may not all be completed on the first visit. The assessment methods used are tailored to the immediate needs of the athlete and we use our discretion on a case-by-case basis.

Management Strategies

Following a concussion, it is important to take some time for physical and cognitive rest, however, the “sitting in a dark room” approach is not always the most effective. Concussions, like other sports injuries, should be properly managed and rehabilitated. Dr. Lynch can guide you through a step-by-step strategy tailored to your optimal recovery. Management strategies will vary for different injuries and patients but may include:
  •  Individualized resting strategies and home instruction
  • Specific recommendations around employment/academic demands
  • Manual therapy for associated complaints (neck pain, whiplash etc.)
  • Visual motor rehabilitation
  • Vestibular therapy
  • Physical exertion testing and exercise plans for return-to-sport

Why Baseline Testing?

Concussions can produce a wide array of symptoms, which poses a challenge for coaches, trainers, parents, and health professionals involved in the care of an injured athlete. The time-course for recovery also varies widely from athlete to athlete, making it impossible to employ a “cookie-cutter” approach to concussion rehabilitation and return-to-play timelines. Currently, there is no reliable diagnostic test or marker that can be used to identify a concussion when it’s occurred, or similarly, determine when a concussion has resolved.

This is the reason why objective baseline testing protocols can be used to track an athlete’s recovery and serve as a tangible measurement for return-to-play readiness. By measuring an athlete’s “normal” level of functioning, we are better able to gauge the level of impairment that may exist post-injury by performing comparative testing. This requires a multifaceted approach and Dr. Meagan Lynch, Chiropractor  believes that no single test should be used in isolation.

Our Baseline Testing Involves:
  • Neurocognitive Assessment
  • Balance and Postural Testing
  • Visual Coordination
  • Cervical spine examination
